While listening to the problem we
all live with and the little girl talk
about the honor roll breakfast she was supposed to attend and get an award but wasn’t
mention got me to think about my experience
I face during elementary and middle
school when I lived in Dubuque IA. We
had a normal routine every morning in school, when we first made it to our class we had to wait until all the morning announcement
were over before starting the day. During these morning announcement we were to
stand up while doing the pledge of an alliance. Then they would begin with
talking about school activity that were happening for the day. After that was
all done it was time for the birthdays for the day. This was something I look forward to because
I always like see if people shared the same birthday with me or anybody I knew.
On October 8 2006 I was waiting for them to say all the birthdays for the day
but they didn’t they only mention on little girl and that wasn’t me for me this
made me feel as if my birthday wasn’t important like everybody else. When I
told my teacher they didn’t mention my birthday she ask me was a sure today was
my birthday then look it up in the system but did nothing else about it.
During my middle year is when my
mom started to noticed the school was treating me and my younger sister unfairly.
I feel it had a lot to do with us being African American and a majority white
state. There were know teacher of color in this entire school there have been
time I going suspend for doing this I seen some of my white friends did with no
consequences at all happening to them. One good thing I liked about going to
school in Iowa was that the teacher I had treated all the students equally.
They took the time out to help make sure everybody understood the material
before moving on. I feel like from the bottom of my heart they really became
teachers to help the student and not in this career for a pay check and I think
do a really good job of prepare student for the future.
